Adrian Noble announced as director on DANNY LA RUE biopic

The former director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Adrian Noble, has been officially announced as the director on DANNY LA RUE – the upcoming original screenplay about the popular performer’s life.

The film is written by Martyn Hesford who wrote the BAFTA-nominated Kenneth Williams biopic FANTABULOSA! starring Micheal Sheen. DANNY LA RUE is produced by Blacklisted Films in conjunction with the BFI.

Noble said:

“What drew me to the project was Martyn’s brilliant and funny screenplay which tells two unexpected love stories in an unexpected way.”

Noble recently directed Kate Bush’s tour – BEFORE THE DAWN – to critical acclaim and has been nominated for over 20 Olivier Awards.

The film is currently in development.

MOVING ON returns, with episodes by Shaun Duggan and Anthony Gannie

The new series of MOVING ON begins on Monday 10th November (and every day that week) on BBC One at 2.15pm. We are delighted that not one, but two of our brilliant clients have written episodes for this sixth series, which was created by Jimmy McGovern.

The first episode, MADGE, is written by Shaun Duggan and stars Academy Award-winner Hayley Mills (POLLYANNA, THE PARENT TRAP). Madge may seem like a perfectly respectable woman in her late 60s – her partner Eric and his family certainly think so – but she is in fact carrying a dark secret… A husband who has been in prison for 12 years!

Episode two, THE SIGNATURE, is written by Anthony Gannie and stars Lisa Riley as school dinner lady Moira, struggling to support her husband Ken, an MS sufferer, and their two kids by keeping down a second job in a corner shop. When a customer Moira thinks is well-off comes in with what turns out to be a winning lottery ticket, Moira lies and says she hasn’t won, stashing the ticket for herself. But can she bring herself to claim the money, or will her conscience get the better of her?

Do tune in to watch these terrific stories, which go out on Monday and Tuesday respectively, and will thereafter be available on BBC iPlayer. You can see more about the series on the BBC website.

THE GIRLS’ CLUB by Martyn Hesford – a Writers’ Company readthrough

Last week, we were excited to stage the second of our new Writers’ Company readthrough events, with an incredible cast performing a rehearsed read of Martyn Hesford’s very funny, all-female ensemble sitcom, THE GIRLS CLUB, which follows the lives and loves of a group of female friends living on a Manchester estate.

readthrougheditedAs well as bravely providing the sound effects of Elsie, a gin-loving King Charles Spaniel, the great Steve Bendelack (FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER, THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, THE ROYLE FAMILY) directed a fantastic cast of actresses including Michelle Holmes, Paula Wilcox, Kathryn Drysdale, Maya Sondhi, Nicola Sanderson, Moya Brady, Abigail Thaw and Stephanie Hyam. Massive thanks must go to Gilly Sanguinetti, Annalisa Gordon & Isabella Riggs at The Artists’ Partnership for their help securing some of these talented ladies for us.

Guests – who enjoyed the brilliant combination of Prosecco and chocolate biscuits – included commissioners, producers and script editors from Channel 4, Big Talk, Tiger Aspect, Hat Trick, Hartswood Films, Mammoth Screen, Drama Republic, Bentley Productions, Red Planet, Retort and Left Bank, among others.

This was the second in this new series of events, following a successful read of Ian Puleston-Davies’ play, SHRINE TO THE COMMON GARDEN GNOME, in the summer. Produced, cast and hosted by us, we see these afternoons as a great chance to proactively engage the industry with our clients’ work in a new, fun and exciting way.
